Final Location Report

We've chosen to film in the woods, using fairy lights as the background.
This is for three reasons:

1) Its accessible

2) Original

3) Fits in with the mood

The area we are thinking of using is a small wooded area on the side of a main road, which does look more effective at night. We thought that there is enough clearing in the middle to fit everything and it easy to transport equipment there.

These are the lights were going to buy as a multi purchase for the backdrop:

Location Ideas

PARTY

An idea sprung to mind that we could emulate something out of teenage drama 'Skins' where one of the members of the band is 'drowning his sorrows' at a party. This would link to the target audience but it would be pretty hard to film.

LIGHTEN UP WOODED AREA

This is our favourite idea for a location for the chorus with the band playing in front. We thought not only would it look effective but would be easy to set up in terms of limited budget and location. It is also original as apart from Ellie Gouldings video for 'Guns and Horses' shown below:

A BEACH

At first we thought that a beach would tie in perfectly with the mood of the song, but on the other hand it is very similar to the original video for 'Sway' and didn't want to copy their style too much as we want our own twist to the song.

Theorists attached to our work

John Corner
SURFACE REALISM- getting all the details write in terms of locations, props and costume. We want to make sure all are suitable to the genre of Indie and tie into the Kooks previous work, for example the use of instruments and everyday locations.

EMOTIONAL REALISM- audience can identify with a character.
The Kooks lyrics to 'Sway' are easily relatable to the young target audience they attract. Talking about heart ache is a easy topic this age group can relate to. With the use of a narrative story we think viewers can follow along and link their own personal experiences to what is happening.

Lowery & DefFleur-
HYPODERMIC SYRINGE THEORY- audience believe and don't question things they see in the media. This is probably one of the most known media theories. In relation to us we have to make our video believe able so audiences can follow along without questioning what's happening too much. A good music video will involve the audience escaping into the world of music.

Perkins
REPRESENTATION- stereotypes can be good and some are positive.
When I think of Indie I immediately think of meaningful lyrics, bands and realistic performances. These are the connotations we want to convey in our video so that the stereotype for an indie band remains positive.

The Kooks - Sway Mood Board

These are our a few things I thought of when I listened
to the song:

The Kooks Target audience/ How band reach audiene

Target Audience

Research shows that the Indie music genre is typically young people aged 14 to 26.
The reason for this is the representation and image of indie bands like our chosen band The Kooks appeals to people of this age. The fact that the band members are young means that people between this age can relate to the bands image, self-written lyrics and emulate their style.

Many indie bands are independent, like The Kooks were before they got signed to virgin records so they rely on technology to promote themselves. Statistics prove
that websites such as MySpace and the television channel MTV (particularly MTV Rock for this genre) are most viewed by 14 to 26 year olds of both genders. This means that people of this age are far more likely to discover indie bands like The Kooks and attend gigs or download music by them.

Although The Kooks are now mainstream, initially they were independent and younger fans often like following bands that are out of the spotlight as they contrast today's pop filled charts. With a lack of manufacturing shown through there laid back style and emotive lyrics The Kooks maybe imperfect but they offer a more realistic approach to music. You especially notice this when watching RnB videos which are high budget with singers and dancers often looking perfect.

Reaching the audience

The Kooks show that they know there niche audience is young and pro dominantly use the Internet on a daily basic, this is why 'The Kooks.com' is a good way of keeping fans updated on the band. I've noticed that the site is updated with videos of the band and messages daily which helps to keep current fans updated. There are also interactive features where fans can leave feedback or just general messages that are in some case replied too.

Fans can talk together as they may have similar outlooks on life if they like similar music and share photos of the band from when they went to see them. Although The Kooks have now been signed by Virgin there are still elements of them being an independent band such as the recent competition for a drawing/photo for their new iPod case. This involves the audience and shows that the band value their opinions.

Fans of the India genre want to be able to relate to what the lyrics of songs are about, so The Kooks often sing about everyday emotions for adolescents.
For example in our chosen song 'Sway' the lyrics 'Take what ever you have to take I'll stand by you' show the willingness to stick by someone. Also the altering melody of the song puts forward a constant change of mood relating to how fast your emotions can alter.

Sway The Video

Watching The Kooks ‘Sway’ has showed me how they band technically construct their music videos.

1)By opening the video with a reasonably long still shot of a beach the mood and scene for the rest of the video is set.

2) Emphasis is particularly put on lead singer, Luke Pritchard.

3) Other shots of importance appear to be close ups of faces to bring through emotions.

4) The fast cuts contrast with the slow beat yet make the video flow well as they are in sync with the track and the facial expressions of the band.

5) Towards the end the (approx 10 secs ) shot of Luke walking whilst singing the songs chorus whilst debris falls down around him brings forwards the meaning of the lyrics.

‘Sway’ from The Kooks second album ‘Konk’ was a big risk for the band because when compared with previous hits like ‘Oh La’ and ‘She moves in her own way’ it is much more emotive and serious, however the codes and the conventions expected from the India genre are still used.

The technical structure of the song starts off with a calm melody that builds up in the last chorus to represent the eruption of emotions with light bulbs fusing and walls crumbling to represent the sudden mood change. Indie music videos often show singers peak in emotion when the song climaxes in this case anger.

The video is heavily weighted by the narrative story that follows lead singer, Luke Pritchard expressing his intense emotions for what we as the audience perceive to be his girlfriend. The monotone colourisation connotes how lonely he feels without her and emphasises the intensity of his emotions.

The location of a ‘seaside resort’ is effective because the beach is used to convey the emotions in the lyrics whereas the arcade is a clever way of introduced the rest of the band into the narrative. Together they are having a good time drinking and doing everyday things such as watching telly and playing cards. This puts forward the use and although it is obviously staged it shows the close relationship of The Kooks as they were one of the few Indie bands who were friends before a mainstream band.

Many camera angles are used to add diversity and show scenes from different perspectives. An effective shot is the ‘camera in hand’ combined with fast cuts to show the singers emotions and ultimately relate to the audience with the feeling of adolescent relationships they may have had.
Costume is fairly stereotypical with various links to the Indie genre allowing the audience to recognise the genre such as skinny jeans, plain white t-shirts and messy hair (an all together at ease look.

Ideas from current videos

PARACHUTE - THE MESS I MADE

Although this isn't something overly effective or difficult we like the idea of extreme close up of the lead singer to convey the emotions of the lyrics.

KINGS OF LEON - USE SOMEBODY

As The Kooks are of a borderline similar genre and 'Use Somebody' is of a similar tone to 'Sway' we liked the idea of included a birdseye view of a lit up city. It would obviously be on a smaller scale to this one but the idea of using lights as part of our video is one we got from this:

Possible Tracks....

A laid back acoustic song that would be effective as we could use features of narrative for example flashbacks. The lyrics are meaningfully and would give us a lot of filming options. Although it isn't one of there most popular songs, it could work well.

Complete contrast with 'Sway', 'Naive' is arguably The Kooks most recognisable song and we felt that the up beat melody would enable us to create a feel good video to compliment the song. The band are a good band to choose because they are in the mainstream but still remain in the indie genre.

Chosen Band - The Kooks

We have chosen The Kooks as we wanted a band from the UK because we thought we
could make a video more effectively if it is set in the place the band is from. Not only are we very familiar with the bands work but the lyrics are very simple to convey through narrative.

KERRANG

Kerrang was primarily a magazine for rock and heavy metal fans.

In 2000 it launched Kerrang radio followed by a music channel and online forum in 2001

Followed by a Kerrang tour in 2004.

Kerrang is a good example of a company who are using different outlets to target audiences of different ages.

MYSPACE

Websites such as Myspace let audiences watch videos and listen to music. It helps to launch unsigned artists and promote signed musicians at the same time. Younger users in particular find the site appealing because they can brown music by genre such as 'hip hop' or 'classical'.
The number of hits per page on Myspace indicate what's popular to record companies.
There is also an interactive feature in that you can contact an artist or leave feedback on the forums. In 2002 it was launched as a social network sight but since the music aspect of the website has overshadowed the personal use. So much so that Myspace Records has been launched. It is basically Myspaces own record label for unsigned talent that has been popular on the site.

Indie Bands

ARCTIC MONKEYS
Arctic Monkeys were already massive way before they inked a deal with Domino in June 2005 with sell out tours, masses of fans subscribes to their blog and dedicated fans who knew there lyrics to famous hits such as 'Teddy Picker' word for word. They have became one of the U.K.'s biggest bands of the 21st century and are of course the most popular indie-rock band.

THE STROKES
The Strokes are one of the few indie-rock bands from America that have been just as popular in the UK, the five piece have had international success. Ever since their debut in 2001 they have gone from strength to strength with a mix of speed percussion, guitars and realatable lyrics.

THE LIBERTINES

Starting off with one aim 'to be the best band in the world' back in 1996 The Libertines showed the public a much more rebellious side to indie rock. Even though they didn't have chart success the bands controversial front man Pete Doherty managed to attract flocks of fans to intimate gigs around the UK.

The Script - The Man Who Can't Be Moved

The Script are a boyband from Dublin who are signed by Song BMG, one of the music companies BIG 4, so this means that the budget for this video is quite higher than others. The Scripts genre is Pop Rock formed in the 1960s is a mixture of pop and rock music and use a catchy pop style with light lyrics, and normally guitar-based songs. The video starts with Danny the main member of the band walking through a big urban city this may show power and dominance. The music video is in narrative which means that the video tells a story throughout it, this is common with most videos particularly indie and pop rock and is mainly a story to do with love and romance and the lyrics play a big part too. The use of shots are ranged, close ups are used the most to show the main member of the band singing also panning is used to show more of the setting around. Another shot that is used regularly is mid-shot so that the background is seen as well as the member of the band. The performer is used to engage the audience throughout, they have also used shots of the full band together in a parking lot with light lighting, the band is used so you can see there performance to make it more entertaining for there fans. The lyrics play a big part within the video as the lyrics are linked to the video this may be why it is narrative. Near to the end of the video there are a range of fast clips of the band together performing and of days passing by and Danny in rain and snow whilst growing older this shows that time is going quick. They also do a shot of a watch that is being re winded forward but faster therefore another way of showing time going by. There are also scenes used of moving traffic going from day to night , but speeded up and slowed down.

This music video has inspired our music video by the way it uses the band to engage the audience and the way they have used editing to slow down and speed up shots which adds a good effect.

Paolo Nutini - Last Request

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CkA4xcIAvuw&ob=av2n

Paolo Nutini is a Scottish singer who also writes his own lyrics making the songs much more personal to his own experiences. 'Last Request' was his debut single and managed to get to number 5 in the UK singles chart in 2006. The song is basically about someone who has accepted their relationship is over but they still want one last night with them.

The video was released in the UK and the US, so it had to appeal to both audiences. This is done by showing celebrations on New Years Eve; something both countries can relate too. Also New Year gives connotations of fresh starts and moving on; this is ironic because the lyrics clearly show Paolo is unwilling to forget the events of the past year.

It starts with a close up of his face so he is singing directly to the audience and adding emotion through eye contact. The white background emphasises how he is feeling and as he is a new artist the focus on him acts as an introduction. There is a black out effect , almost like the person watching him (us the audience) is blinking- bringing us into the video. It also adds a slow pace to the video matching the instrumental.

The camera slowly zooms out to show Paolo is sitting in the middle of two couples kissing. This is an effective way to show how lonely he is and unable to connect to the people around him. The scene cuts to a bottle of champagne opening suggesting celebration and happiness. The blue lighting and mascaraed costumes of the party goers add sophistication. The fresh colour blue also juxtaposes the red colour of his shirt reinforcing his inability to join in.
By cutting to other people around his smiling and laughing in slow motion it makes the audience sympathise with Paolo. The shadows on his face link to sadness and depression even though New Years Eve is traditionally the opposite. The camera switches to show Paolo's point of view which is a clever way of letting the audience into the artists mind. He is focusing on happy couples around him; although the lyrics say 'sure I can accept were going no where, so one last time let's go there' I think the song is much more deeper than him wanting one last night of passion. Looking at happy couples around him hints that he wants back in a relationship with the women he misses, and by thinking of her on New Year could mean he wants to start a fresh with her.

A switch of location to the woods isolates him further, in the background people dancing are visible. Everyone around him, everywhere he goes people are celebrating and he can't escape from this. After ending up at a quiet bar, a black snooker ball in showed being potted. This is significant because it symbolises either the end a game or bad luck, either way it doesn't give much hope for the new year about the start. By sitting at the bar drinking on his own, Paolo is relating to the audience as most people can remember trying to 'drown their sorrows away.' For a while it looks as if he is forgetting but one last glace shows he is still searching for her.

The famous mirror trick is used again- something popular in music videos. He looks forward at himself alone and can see a couple embracing next to him. This suggests what he is now (lonely, heart broken) and what he was before and wants to be again- in love. The champagne at the end opening in slow motion signifies the start of the New Year and as an audience we hope to see Paolo joining in with everyone. However the video ends with a slow zoom out of him at bar on his own.

I think the video for 'Last Request' is simple, but for a debut its powerful because it shows Paolo as an ordinary person dealing with heartbreak without any glamorisation. As an audience we connect to him and like him because he is singing directly to the camera making the song feel personal. We also sympathise with the character he is trying to create but wonder if his lyrics are from experience.

Jay Sean Ft Lil Wayne- Down

I choose this video because it was Jay Sean's comeback track after being signed by a record label Cash Money Records in the USA, I wanted to see if he used his video to show the changes he has undergone to become a better artist. As Jay Sean falls into the R'n'B category, I expect to see girls, items showing extravagance and fashionable clothes.

The close up of the rose at the start gives connotations of romance however this is juxtaposed with the blue tint of the video. The colour blue stands for the cold, so by having a blue rose it could show that the love there was is now tainted. The spilling of the drink over the rose emphasises the feeling that something is wrong. The lighting effects being dark is very unusual because normally in the R'n'b/ Pop lighting is bright, this shows that they have linked the effects to the narrative in the video.

The mid-shot mirror scene that follows appeals to female fans and links into one of the niche audiences; teenage girls. It also shows his masculinity and transformation from boy to man since being dropped by EMI/Virgin.

This is enforced with the use of his old song 'Stay' playing non-diagetically in the background by stopping this on his I-pod and is also a method of advertising. Many artists are asked by companies to use products in their videos for promotion purposes an example of this is girl band 'The Saturdays' wearing toy watches in their single 'Missing You.'

The next 0.27s shot of the camera gliding around the ballroom gives connotations of extravagance using chandeliers an champagne to convey this. The glow light effect travelling around the room adds a modern feel to the video. After seeing this as an audience we can tell that the video is now set in a party scene, everyone is dressed in monochrome colours to add an element of style and class. The attractive women are the highlight of attention so the mid shot of them opening the door for Jay shows how important he is. This is also clarified because he is wearing white which is differ ant to everyone else and the women are obviously drawn to him because they put his suit jacket on for him making him superior. The inside of the jacket is significant because it is red which could mean that it is either designer or customised.

He continues to sing directly to the camera on an eye to eye level thus interacting to the audience and making it feel like a personal performance. The dance routine shows two things; that he has other talents and by positioning Jay in the middle it again establishes his importance. The video uses colour to make references to the mood so when it changes from blue to pink it shows love and lust supporting the narrative. Even simple actions like Jay brushing off his jacket could arguably be an attempt at him 'brushing' off the touch of other girls- he is looking for one in particular. The plot keeps the audience interested and other obvious codes like the RnB dancing make the genre known.

The scene suddenly changes back to blue when he finds the girl he looking for making it see sensual- the tilted frame helps to convey this and shadows add intimacy. As she walks away, he follows proving he is the perfect gentlemen and it also contrasts to the other girls following him before yet she is the only one he is after. The lyrics fit perfectly with his actions an example of this is when he says 'you are my only' whilst gazing into her eyes. More technical effects are used with glitter hovering around the couple.

There is colour swap for Lil Waynes verse - red. Red shows power and danger it is also the opposite of the blues and pinks we've seen so far. The British flag shows Jay is proud of his origin but is also a clever way of relating back to his fans in the UK. He is also aware that being seen with someone like Lil Wayne is good for his reputation and a way of getting onto the RnB scene in America.

'Cash Money' logos projected on the walls is not only advertising the record label but hints that Jay is happier with his new label. The video end with Lil Wayne and Jay Sean shaking hands so now not only are they colleagues but they are friends this puts Jay in a powerful position.

Textual Analysis of Existing Music Videos

Although many artists today such as Lady Gaga rebel the conventions set by previous acts, they are defiantly affected by it. Music videos of the past have helped to shape what comes after, this could be in the form of ideas or even what not to do.

Research into Music Genres

Music Video or Short Film?

As a group we have chosen to do a music video as we have a keen interest in current chart music and would enjoy researching other acts to get ideas for our final product. We also did a short crime film last year so feel that we would benefit from trying something differant. Everyone in the group opted to do down the music video path so it was clear which choice was most popular.

All three of us thought about each idea over the summer and came back with more ideas for a music video. After looking at previous videos we're leaning towards pop, indie or soft rock. This is because we are most familiar with these genres of music and would know more about the target audience, codes and conventions of each and what the viewers would expect to see in the video.

Preliminary DVD Cover and Busted Video

This is Video for Busted,'What I Go To School for' that we compiled as a class to emulate there style and camera shots.

Finally I pasted in a barcode, copyright logo and DVD symbol to make the final product look more professional and like the ones you can buy. By the copyright symbol I wrote a paragraph about the record label and artist rights. In conclusion, I didn't find producing a DVD cover for 'cry me a river' that difficult as long as it was planned before.

Our chosen song was 'cry me a river' by Justin Timberlake, released in 2002. After listening to the song and analysing the lyrics the video helped us imagine the plot in the song. After this we wrote a list of possible suitable locations to take pictures for the DVD cover that were easily accessible from college.

We came to the conclusion that a river would be the most suitable place as it ties into the song title. The song is about a lost love so we thought because both of us are going to be in the pictures, one person should be looking into the camera (missing someone) and the other person should be walking away from the relationship. Our poses for the photos were quite natural because we wanted to show emotions without physically looking to artificial.

Our initial idea was to take a picture of Mel with sunglasses on and show the reflection of me in the sunglasses, as if that is what is in her thoughts. However this didn't work out to well so we used to sunglasses as a prop to give a mysterious aspect and make her look depressed. We took images from different angles of my eye to blend into the image of Mel. I thought this would tie into 'crying' and also make the image look more complex. By taking numerous photos we ended up with a few we liked and others that we couldn't fit into our ideas. Because it was a sunny day, our lighting was natural so we didn't feel the need to use the flash on the camera. We thought natural lighting would add to the realistic image we were trying to create.

We already had an idea of what we wanted to final product to look like after editing but by playing around we found new techniques that looked effective. After changing the dimensions on Photoshop to that of a DVD cover with a spine I started to put images in place. I wanted to put a close up image of Mel on the front with a blend of my eye by adjusting the transparency. We sharpened the image of Mel to make sure she was still visible and also added a contrast to make the picture look more high quality.

Now that the basic background of the front cover was done I focused on the back. I used an image of me taken by Mel walking away (like our first idea). By putting each person on separate sides it shows that breakdown and distance between them; like the song states. We kept the image the same because the background was of The Wrekin so it looked intentional. But to make me stand out from the backdrop I highlighted myself and make the section look brighter. At this point the back looked simpler than the front and the two didn’t really connect. We looked at our still images of the river and cropped them to take out any trees; so just the water remained. Then we made the contrast on the image about 20% and stretched it over the whole image- front, spine and back. This made all of the cover have a water ripple effect as if it was under water to tie in with 'river' and it also added continuity too the whole cover.

At this point the only thing not completed was the spine, all we did to it was add contrast to the river image so it was more noticeable and acts as a background. All the major image effects were completed and overall I didn't find Photoshop to hard to use after having a look at the different effects available.

To finish off we needed to add text (title, DVD logo, copyright etc) to make the cover look more official and resemble others that are around. We wanted to keep the images the main focal point so we kept the writing in a simple 'Lucida handwriting' font as it looked italic and fitted into the theme. I chose to keep it in black to look simple and not to animated and so people can easily see it. I chose to put '...cry me a river' instead of 'Cry Me a River' so it looked less formal and appealed to the teenage target audience and the '...' give connotations of a story.

After looking at other DVD covers I saw that there was a track list. Instead of making one up I went on the internet and found the track list for Justin Timberlake’s album 'Justified' with the song 'cry me a river' on. To make the track list look different I faded the coloured on each song from black to white to give the impression them were fading like the relationship and due to the water.
